The Terrible Date
今日は土曜日、健一と由美の初デートの日だ。天気は晴れ。由美は駅前のカフェで健一を待っていた。時計を見ると、もう10分遅れている。由美は深いため息をついた。「遅刻って、ありえない。」小さな声でつぶやいた。その時、健一が小走りでやって来た。「ごめん！電車が遅れてさ！」由美は冷たく答えた。「それなら、もっと早く出ればよかったんじゃない？」健一は少し戸惑ったが、笑顔を作った。「まあ、でも今着いたから大丈夫でしょ？行こう！」二人はカフェに入ったが、何となくぎこちない空気が漂っていた。席に着き、健一がメニューを見ながら言った。「コーヒー飲む？それとも紅茶？」「コーヒーでいいわ。」由美の声はどこか冷たい。健一は店員を呼び、二人分のコーヒーを注文した。「で、由美ちゃんの趣味って何？」由美は一瞬黙ったあと、答えた。「読書かな。静かに本を読むのが好き。」健一は驚いた顔をした。「えー！読書？俺は全然本とか読まないな！時間の無駄じゃない？」由美の表情が曇った。「時間の無駄？それって、私の趣味をバカにしてるの？」健一は慌てて手を振った。「いやいや、そういう意味じゃないんだ。ただ、俺はアクティブなことが好きだからさ！スポーツとか、外で遊ぶのが楽しいじゃん！」「だから何？」由美は不機嫌そうに言った。「私にスポーツしろってこと？」「別にそうじゃないけど、趣味が全然違うなって思ってさ。」二人の間に沈黙が流れた。コーヒーが運ばれてきても、その静寂は続いた。やがて由美が口を開いた。「健一さん、私たち、合わないかもしれないね。」健一は驚いた表情を浮かべた。「え、そんなことないよ！まだ始まったばかりだし！」「でも、最初からこうだと、この先もうまくいかない気がする。」健一は言葉を失った。二人は黙ってコーヒーを飲み、その後ほとんど話すことなく別れた。由美は駅へ向かいながら、空を見上げた。「晴れてるのに、なんでこんな気分なんだろう。」そして、健一もまた一人で歩きながら、小さくつぶやいた。「こんなに難しいもんだとは思わなかったな。」
Today is Saturday, Kenichi and Yumi's first date. The weather is nice. Yumi is waiting for Kenichi at a cafe in front of the station. Looking at her watch, she saw that he was already ten minutes late. Yumi sighed deeply. "There's no way he's late.” She murmured softly. At that moment, Kenichi came running toward her. "I'm sorry,” he said. "The train was late," to which Yumi replied coldly: "Then why didn't you leave earlier?” Kenichi was a little confused, but smiled. "Well, but we just got here, so it's okay, right?" "Let's go,” he said, and they entered the café, but the atmosphere was somehow awkward. They took their seats and Kenichi looked at the menu. "Do you want a cup of coffee?" "Or tea?” "Coffee is fine.” Yumi's voice was somewhat cold. Kenichi called the waiter and ordered coffee for two. Kenichi asked, “So, what are your hobbies, Yumi? Yumi was silent for a moment, then answered. “Reading, I guess." "I like to read quietly." Kenichi looked surprised. "What?" "Reading?" "I don't read books at all!" "Isn't that a waste of time?” Yumi's expression clouded. "A waste of time?" "Are you making fun of my hobby?” Kenichi waved his hand hurriedly. "No, no, that's not what I meant." "It's just that I like to be active!" "You know, sports, playing outside, it's fun," he said, to which Yumi replied, "So what?” She spoke in a grim tone. "Do you mean you want me to play sports?" "I don't mean that, but I just think our hobbies are totally different.” A silence fell between them. The silence continued even after the coffee was served. Eventually, Yumi opened her mouth. "Kenichi, I don't think we're a good fit." Kenichi looked surprised. "Oh, no!" "We've only just started," he said, to which Yumi replied, "But if we're like this from the beginning, I have a feeling we're not going to get along.” Kenichi was speechless. They drank their coffee in silence and parted without speaking for the rest of the day. Yumi looked up at the sky as she walked to the station. "It's sunny, but why do I feel like this?” Kenichi also mumbled quietly as he walked alone: "I didn't think it would be this difficult.”
