The Kafkaesque

The Kafkaesque
What is the Kafkaesque? It's not mere absurdity or strange tales. In Kafka's world, there is an uncanny mechanism lurking beneath the surface of reality and an abyss in which human helplessness is exposed. For example, Gregor Zamza in “The Metamorphosis” faces social isolation and family indifference that transcend the fact that he has suddenly become an insect one day. The reader is enveloped in a strange sense of finding truth in unreality. Characteristic of the Kafkaesque situation is the anxiety of an existence whose purpose is unclear, yet one is compelled to follow it. In “Judgment,” the protagonist Josef K. is suddenly arrested and entangled in the logic of an invisible law, even though he has committed no crime. Such a story symbolizes the heartlessness of bureaucracy and the absurd pressures of the individual in modern society. What makes the Kafkaesque worldview so appealing is that it is not merely fictional, but has connections to our everyday lives. For example, the management of personal information in the digital society, and the mechanical systems that are advanced in the name of efficiency. These remind us of the “invisible labyrinth” into which we are unknowingly swallowed. To be Kafkaesque is not to fully understand contradictions and irrationalities, but to accept them while continuing to question our own way of being. It is a small freedom found in the midst of endless questioning, and a ray of hope.
