The Taxi

The cab came to a quiet stop and the doors opened automatically. Mariko slowly sat in the back seat as the city's nightscape reflected in the window. The driver, a middle-aged man wearing white gloves, smiled politely through the mirror. "Where to?” the driver asked. Mariko answered, a little puzzled. "Um, to Shinjuku station, please." "Yes, ma'am." The driver quietly started the car. The soft sound of the radio played inside the car, and Mariko looked out the window. The neon lights of the buildings were shining brightly and the city of Tokyo was moving busily. "Tokyo Tower looks so beautiful today.” The driver started a conversation. "Yes, it does." "I never get tired of seeing it." Mariko replied with a smile. "There may be some traffic on the way to Shinjuku station, are you in a hurry?" "No, I'm not." "I have plenty of time." Mariko replied gently. The cab continued smoothly. When the taxi stopped at a traffic light, the driver spoke to her again. "Do you live in Tokyo?" "No, I'm here as a tourist." "I'm from Osaka." "That's nice." "Is this your first time in Tokyo?" "Yes, but I'm really enjoying it." "I'm seeing a lot of places." "I'm glad to hear that." "Shinjuku is especially lively at night, so enjoy yourself.” Mariko thanked the driver for his kind words, and suddenly her trip seemed even more special. The cab eventually arrived near Shinjuku Station, the neon lights brightly illuminating the interior. "We've arrived." "The fare is 2,450 yen." Mariko took out her wallet and handed over the money. "Thank you very much." "It was a very pleasant trip." "Thank you very much, and have a pleasant trip." The door opened quietly and Mariko stepped out. The cold night air touched her cheeks and she disappeared into the streets of Shinjuku.
