Ordering Sushi
Mr. Tanaka brought his foreign friend, Mike, who was visiting a sushi restaurant for the first time, to a nearby conveyor belt sushi restaurant. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and the sound of the chefs' voices and spinning plates echoed pleasantly. "Welcome!” the waiter said cheerfully. "There are two of us." When Mr. Tanaka answered, the waiter led him to a counter seat, saying, "This way, please." Once seated, Mike rolled his eyes and stared at the spinning sushi plates. "It's amazing,” he said. "The plates are really spinning," Mr. Tanaka said with a laugh. "That's right." "This is conveyor belt sushi." "If you're hungry, you can take any plate you want.” Mike asked Mr. Tanaka a little anxiously: "But I don't know which one to choose." "Do you have any suggestions?” "Well, why don't you try the tuna first?" "It's the red fish." "Ah, here it is,” said Mr. Tanaka, who quickly took a plate of tuna and placed it in front of Mike. Mike fearfully used his chopsticks and brought the sushi to his mouth. After a few moments, his eyes lit up. "It's tasty!" "The fish is fresh and melts in your mouth," he said, and Mr. Tanaka nodded in satisfaction. "I'm glad to hear that." "Then let's try the salmon next.” Then the waiter approached. "Can I get you anything else?” Mr. Tanaka asked, “This is Mike's first time here, so could you give us a few recommendations?” The waiter smiled and said, “Sure." "I recommend the shrimp nigiri and the seasonal fish, kampachi." "Also, the sea urchin is very popular," he replied. “Sea urchin?" Mike nodded his head. "What's that?" "Sea urchin is a sea creature with a creamy flavor." "You may or may not like it, but you should give it a try." Mr. Tanaka explained. Mike nodded his head in interest. "Then I'll have the sea urchin and shrimp, please." "Sure thing.” The waiter confirmed the order and immediately approached the sushi chef. A few minutes later, the sea urchin and shrimp nigiri was presented over the counter. Mike cautiously took a bite of the sea urchin. "Oh, this is a little peculiar, but not bad," and Mr. Tanaka replied with a smile. "There are so many different kinds of sushi, you should try them all.” The two continued to take one plate after another, enjoying their sushi and continuing their conversation. For Mike, the encounter with Japanese sushi culture was a great experience.
