The Weight of Ordinary Lives

Two colleagues were sitting on a park bench talking after work.
It was an autumn evening, the reddish sky was gradually darkening, and a cool breeze was blowing.
One of them grabbed a can of coffee and opened his mouth.
"What do you think about these days?"
I'm wondering if it's okay for us to keep going at this pace, in addition to work.
Do you have any big goals or dreams?
The other man remained silent and thoughtful for a while before answering.
“Dreams, I used to have a lot of dreams, to be honest."
"I wanted to make a movie or write a book."
But now I'm so busy with the tasks at hand that I don't have time to think about them.
What about you?
Me?
Hmmm, maybe it's the same for me.
When I was a university student, I thought 'I want to leave my name behind,' but once I entered the workforce, I realized how abstract and unrealistic that idea was.
But, don't you think it's a little scary to go on with your 'nothing special' life?”
I guess so.
I don't think that's a bad thing.
I don't think that's a bad thing, but sometimes I wonder if it's enough.
In the end, life is about whether or not you are satisfied with yourself.
I think you suffer because you compare your values too much with others.”
You may be right.
But how do you create a life that you are satisfied with?
For example, if you were to quit your job tomorrow, what would you do?
Quit?
That's extreme.
But...if that were to happen, I might take a backpack and go on a trip.
I'd like to travel around Asia, talk to local people, and see how they live.
The world is a big place, and I want to feel like it's not all about where I am.
I like that.
I wish I could be free like that.
But the reality is...
you know, I have a mortgage and family expectations.
It's not easy to move.
That's true.
Freedom may be valuable only when there are certain restrictions.
But I don't think it's a good idea to tie yourself down too much.
Sometimes you need to stop and ask yourself, “How am I doing right now?
I think we need time to ask the question.
The sun set completely and the streetlights began to glow dimly.
They did not speak for a while, listening to the children playing in the distance.
Then one of them said quietly: "Somehow, I feel a little better now."
"Thank you."
"I'd like to talk more about this kind of thing."
"I agree."
"Let's not be in a hurry to find the answer."
They got up and walked slowly in the direction of the station.
