Kiki is a 13-year-old apprentice witch. Following witch tradition, she decided to move to a new town by herself to train. Arriving in the seaside town, flying through the air with her black cat, Gigi, Kiki is excited about her first adult life. However, she is not very welcome in her new town, and Kiki struggles to find her place in the world. Then she meets Mrs. Osono, the kind wife of a baker, and is able to rent a part of her store to live in. Kiki takes advantage of her ability to fly on a broomstick and starts working as a courier. Her first deliveries do not go well, but as she gains experience little by little, Kiki begins to gain confidence. Through her deliveries, she meets various people and grows through her interactions with them. A boy named Dragonfly, who becomes her friend, becomes especially important to Kiki, but she is confused and has differences with him as well. Eventually, Kiki almost loses her magical powers. She loses her self-confidence and feels as if she is incapable of doing anything, but with the support of Gigi and her new friends, she begins to look at herself in a new light. When a great crisis arises, Kiki believes in her own power and decides to be brave and help people. Kiki gradually takes a step forward as an adult, with a renewed sense of her own power and the meaning of her existence. The image of Kiki flying on a broomstick toward the sky seemed to symbolize hope and a new future.
