Exploring a Haunted House
探索するというのは楽しい冒険のように思えるかもしれないが、私が訪れたその古びた屋敷は、ただの「冒険」ではなかった。
Exploring may seem like a fun adventure, but that old mansion I visited was not just an "adventure".
あれは恐怖そのものだった。
It was horror itself.
人里離れた山奥にあるその屋敷は、長い間放置されており、草木に覆われた門を越えると、空気が一気に重くなったのを感じた。
Located deep in the remote mountains, the mansion had been abandoned for a long time, and as soon as I crossed the grass-covered gate, I felt a sudden heaviness in the air.
屋敷に足を踏み入れた瞬間、強烈な黴の臭いが鼻を突いた。
As soon as I stepped into the mansion, a strong smell of mold hit my nose.
床はぎしぎしと音を立て、まるで何かが私の行動を監視しているかのようだった。
The floor creaked, as if something was watching my every move.
壁に掛けられた古びた絵画の人物の目が、薄暗い明かりの中で私を追いかけているように見えた。
The eyes of the figures in the old paintings hanging on the walls seemed to follow me in the dim light.
冷たい風がどこからともなく吹き抜け、背筋がぞくりとした。
A cold wind blew out of nowhere, sending shivers down my spine.
屋敷の奥へと進むにつれ、異様な気配がどんどん濃くなっていった。
As I moved deeper into the mansion, the strange presence became thicker and thicker.
そして、一階の奥にある部屋の扉がひとりでにゆっくりと開いた。
Then, the door to a room at the far end of the first floor slowly opened by itself.
その音は、静寂の中でやけに大きく響いた。
The sound was unusually loud in the silence.
中を覗き込むと、埃だらけの古い家具の間に一つの人形がぽつんと置かれていた。
I peeked inside and saw a doll standing alone among the dusty old furniture.
その人形の顔は、不気味なまでにリアルで、どこか苦悶の表情を浮かべているように見えた。
The doll's face was eerily realistic, and it looked as if it was in some sort of agony.
手に取ろうと近づいた瞬間、背後で低い笑い声が聞こえたのだ。
As I approached to pick it up, I heard a low chuckle behind me.
慌てて振り向いたが、誰もいない。
I turned around in a panic, but no one was there.
だが、冷たい視線を感じる。
But I could feel cold eyes on me.
逃げ出そうと踵を返した瞬間、今度は上の階から重い足音が聞こえてきた。
Just as I turned on my heel to run away, I heard heavy footsteps coming from upstairs.
誰かがゆっくりと、だが確実にこちらへ向かってきている。
Someone was slowly but surely moving toward us.
息をするのも忘れるほどの恐怖の中で、足がすくんで動かない。
I was so terrified that I forgot to breathe, and my legs were frozen in place.
やがてその足音は目の前の階段の上で止まり、闇の中から赤い瞳がじっとこちらを見つめていた。
Eventually, the footsteps stopped at the top of the stairs in front of me, and I saw red eyes staring at me from the darkness.
何があったのか、その後の記憶は曖昧だ。
My memory of what happened next is vague.
ただ、外の冷たい夜風を感じた時、自分が屋敷の外に飛び出していたのは覚えている。
I do remember, however, that I was running out of the mansion when I felt the cold night wind outside.
振り返ると、そこにはただの廃墟が静かに佇んでいるだけだった。
When I looked back, there was nothing but a ruin standing there silently.
しかし、確かに感じた。
But I surely felt it.
あの屋敷には、人間の世界を超えた何かが棲んでいるのだと。
I knew that something beyond the human world inhabited that mansion.
二度と近づくことはないと誓った。
I swore I would never go near it again.
だが、あの赤い瞳だけは今も瞼の裏に焼き付いて離れない。
But those red eyes are still burned into the back of my eyelids.
