ひどいデート
The Terrible Date
今日は土曜日、健一と由美の初デートの日だ。
Today is Saturday, Kenichi and Yumi's first date.
天気は晴れ。
The weather is nice.
由美は駅前のカフェで健一を待っていた。
Yumi is waiting for Kenichi at a cafe in front of the station.
時計を見ると、もう10分遅れている。
Looking at her watch, she saw that he was already ten minutes late.
由美は深いため息をついた。
Yumi sighed deeply.
「遅刻って、ありえない。」
"There's no way he's late."
小さな声でつぶやいた。
She murmured softly.
その時、健一が小走りでやって来た。
At that moment, Kenichi came running toward her.
「ごめん！
"I'm sorry," he said.
電車が遅れてさ！」
"The train was late," to which Yumi replied coldly: "Then why didn't you leave earlier?"
由美は冷たく答えた。
Kenichi was a little confused, but smiled.
「それなら、もっと早く出ればよかったんじゃない？」
"Well, but we just got here, so it's okay, right?"
健一は少し戸惑ったが、笑顔を作った。
"Let's go," he said, and they entered the café, but the atmosphere was somehow awkward.
「まあ、でも今着いたから大丈夫でしょ？
They took their seats and Kenichi looked at the menu.
行こう！」
"Do you want a cup of coffee?"
二人はカフェに入ったが、何となくぎこちない空気が漂っていた。
"Or tea?"
席に着き、健一がメニューを見ながら言った。
"Coffee is fine."
「コーヒー飲む？
Yumi's voice was somewhat cold.
それとも紅茶？」
Kenichi called the waiter and ordered coffee for two.
「コーヒーでいいわ。」
Kenichi asked, "So, what are your hobbies, Yumi?
由美の声はどこか冷たい。
Yumi was silent for a moment, then answered.
健一は店員を呼び、二人分のコーヒーを注文した。
"Reading, I guess."
「で、由美ちゃんの趣味って何？」
"I like to read quietly."
由美は一瞬黙ったあと、答えた。
Kenichi looked surprised.
「読書かな。
"What?"
静かに本を読むのが好き。」
"Reading?"
健一は驚いた顔をした。
"I don't read books at all!"
「えー！
"Isn't that a waste of time?"
読書？
Yumi's expression clouded.
俺は全然本とか読まないな！
"A waste of time?"
時間の無駄じゃない？」
"Are you making fun of my hobby?"
由美の表情が曇った。
Kenichi waved his hand hurriedly.
「時間の無駄？
"No, no, that's not what I meant."
それって、私の趣味をバカにしてるの？」
"It's just that I like to be active!"
健一は慌てて手を振った。
"You know, sports, playing outside, it's fun," he said, to which Yumi replied, "So what?"
「いやいや、そういう意味じゃないんだ。
She spoke in a grim tone.
ただ、俺はアクティブなことが好きだからさ！
"Do you mean you want me to play sports?"
スポーツとか、外で遊ぶのが楽しいじゃん！」
"I don't mean that, but I just think our hobbies are totally different."
「だから何？」
A silence fell between them.
由美は不機嫌そうに言った。
The silence continued even after the coffee was served.
「私にスポーツしろってこと？」
Eventually, Yumi opened her mouth.
「別にそうじゃないけど、趣味が全然違うなって思ってさ。」
"Kenichi, I don't think we're a good fit."
二人の間に沈黙が流れた。
Kenichi looked surprised.
コーヒーが運ばれてきても、その静寂は続いた。
"Oh, no!"
やがて由美が口を開いた。
"We've only just started," he said, to which Yumi replied, "But if we're like this from the beginning, I have a feeling we're not going to get along."
「健一さん、私たち、合わないかもしれないね。」
Kenichi was speechless.
健一は驚いた表情を浮かべた。
They drank their coffee in silence and parted without speaking for the rest of the day.
「え、そんなことないよ！
Yumi looked up at the sky as she walked to the station.
まだ始まったばかりだし！」
"It's sunny, but why do I feel like this?"
「でも、最初からこうだと、この先もうまくいかない気がする。」
Kenichi also mumbled quietly as he walked alone: "I didn't think it would be this difficult."
健一は言葉を失った。
二人は黙ってコーヒーを飲み、その後ほとんど話すことなく別れた。
由美は駅へ向かいながら、空を見上げた。
「晴れてるのに、なんでこんな気分なんだろう。」
そして、健一もまた一人で歩きながら、小さくつぶやいた。
「こんなに難しいもんだとは思わなかったな。」
