The Campsite
キャンプ場は静かだった。
The campground was quiet.
夜の空には星がきらきらと輝いていた。
Stars were twinkling in the night sky.
田中さんと山田さんはテントのそばで焚火を囲んでいた。
Tanaka-san and Yamada-san were sitting around the campfire by their tent.
「いい天気だね。」
"It's nice weather."
田中さんは笑いながら言った。
Tanaka said so with a laugh.
「星がこんなにたくさん見えるなんて、都会では考えられない。」
"I can't imagine seeing so many stars in the city."
「本当だね。」
"It's true."
山田さんはカップから温かいコーヒーをすすった。
Yamada-san sipped warm coffee from his cup.
「それに、この焚火。
"And this fire."
暖かくて気持ちがいい。」
"It's nice and warm."
近くの森からフクロウの鳴き声が聞こえた。
They heard an owl hooting in the nearby forest.
二人は耳を澄ました。
They listened carefully.
「自然って、すごいよね。」
"Nature is amazing, isn't it?"
田中さんは空を見上げた。
Tanaka looked up at the sky.
「でも…ちょっと怖いかも。」
"But, it's a little scary."
「怖い？」
"Scary?"
山田さんは笑った。
Yamada laughed.
「何が怖いの？」
"What are you afraid of?"
「だって、熊とか出てきたらどうする？」
"What if a bear or something comes out?"
田中さんは冗談っぽく言ったが、少し真剣な顔をしていた。
Tanaka-san said jokingly, but he looked a little serious.
「熊なんて出ないよ、この辺では。」
"There are no bears around here, you know."
山田さんは肩をすくめた。
Yamada-san shrugged.
「でも、もし出たら、この焚火で追い払えばいいさ。」
"But if they do, we'll use the fire to scare them away."
「そんなに簡単にいくかな…。」
"I doubt it will be that easy."
田中さんは苦笑いした。
Tanaka-san laughed.
その時、森の奥から何かが動く音がした。
At that moment, they heard something moving deep in the forest.
二人は同時にそちらを見た。
They both looked in that direction at the same time.
「今の、何だと思う？」
"What do you think that was?"
田中さんは声を潜めて言った。
Tanaka-san said in a hushed voice.
「たぶん…風かな。」
"I think it was the wind."
山田さんは少し緊張した声で答えた。
Yamada-san answered in a slightly nervous voice.
しかし、風にしては音が近すぎた。
But the sound was too close for wind.
二人はお互いに顔を見合わせた。
They looked at each other.
「ちょっと見に行ってみる？」
"Do you want to go take a look?"
山田さんが言った。
Yamada-san said.
「いやいや、ここにいた方が安全だよ。」
"No, no, it's safer to stay here!"
田中さんは焚火の近くに座り直した。
Tanaka-san sat back down near the campfire.
森の音は再び静かになった。
The forest was quiet again.
二人は焚火の火を見つめながら、夜の静けさを楽しむことにした。
The two stared into the fire, enjoying the stillness of the night.
「やっぱり自然はいいな。」
"Nature is nice after all."
田中さんは言った。
Tanaka-san said.
「怖がりのくせにね。」
"You're a scaredy cat, you know that?"
山田さんは笑った。
Yamada-san laughed.
