トーランスの家族は、冬の間閉鎖されるホテル「オーバールックホテル」の管理人として、山奥へ引っ越しました。
The Torrance family has moved deep into the mountains to serve as caretakers of the Overlook Hotel, a hotel that is closed for the winter.
ジャック、妻のウェンディ、そして小さな息子ダニーの三人です。
They are Jack, his wife Wendy, and their little son Danny.
しかし、そのホテルには不気味な過去が隠されていました。
But the hotel hides an eerie past.
ホテルに到着した直後から、ダニーは奇妙な幻覚を見るようになります。
Shortly after arriving at the hotel, Danny begins to have strange hallucinations.
彼には特別な力があり、「シャイニング」と呼ばれるその力で、普通の人が見えないものを感じ取ることができるのです。
He has a special power, called The Shining, that allows him to sense things that ordinary people cannot see.

He witnesses an elevator sinking in a pool of blood and twin girls in a hotel hallway.

He is informed that the girls are the children of a family that was previously involved in a tragedy at the hotel.
一方、ジャックもホテルの中で異変を感じ始めます。
Meanwhile, Jack also begins to sense something strange in the hotel.

He tries to concentrate on his work as a novelist, but the quietness and isolation of the hotel gradually takes its toll on his spirit.

Eventually, he meets a stranger, Grady, in the hotel bar.
だが、その男は実在する人物ではなく、過去にホテルで一家を斧で殺した元管理人の幽霊でした。
However, he is not a real person, but the ghost of a former caretaker who killed a family in the hotel with an axe in the past.
グレイディはジャックを誘惑し、「家族の問題を解決する方法」を囁きます。
Grady seduces Jack and whispers to him how to solve the family's problems.
ジャックの精神はどんどん狂気に飲み込まれ、家族に対する態度が豹変します。
Jack's spirit is increasingly consumed by madness, and his attitude toward his family changes.
彼は突然ウェンディとダニーに怒鳴り散らしたり、深夜に奇妙なことを呟いたりするようになります。
He suddenly starts yelling at Wendy and Danny and muttering strange things late at night.
一方、ダニーは「レッドラム（REDRUM）」という謎の言葉を繰り返し口にし、それが恐ろしい警告であることに気づきます。
Meanwhile, Danny repeatedly utters the mysterious word REDRUM and realizes it is a terrifying warning.
鏡に映ったその言葉は「MURDER（殺人）」を意味していたのです。
In the mirror, the word means MURDER.
ある夜、ジャックはついに狂気に完全に支配されます。
One night, Jack is finally completely overcome by madness.
斧を手に取り、ウェンディとダニーを追い詰めようとします。
He picks up an axe and tries to hunt down Wendy and Danny.
ウェンディは息子を守るため、ホテル中を逃げ回りながら必死に戦います。
Wendy fights desperately to protect her son, fleeing throughout the hotel.
だが、ホテルそのものも生きているかのように、家族を閉じ込めようとするのです。
But the hotel itself, as if alive, tries to lock the family in.
ジャックが扉を斧で叩き壊し、「ヒアズ・ジョニー！」
The scene where Jack smashes down the door with an axe and shouts, Hear's Johnny! is the pinnacle of breathtaking terror.
と叫ぶ場面は、息を飲む恐怖の頂点です。
But in the end, Wendy and Danny tactfully escape from the hotel, leaving Jack to freeze alone in the snow.
だが最後に、ウェンディとダニーは機転を利かせてホテルから逃げ出し、ジャックは雪の中で孤独に凍りついていきます。
The Overlook Hotel is now quiet, but the horror still lurks there.
オーバールックホテルは静寂を取り戻しましたが、その恐怖はまだそこに潜んでいます。
