ある朝、グレーゴル・ザムザが目を覚ますと、自分が巨大な虫に変わっていることに気づいた。
One morning, Gregor Samsa woke up to find himself transformed into a giant insect.
彼は硬い甲殻に包まれた体と多数の脚を動かしてみるが、それらをうまく使いこなすことができなかった。
He tried to move his body, which was encased in a hard shell, and his numerous legs, but could not manage to use them properly.
彼は驚きと恐怖を感じながらも、なんとかベッドから抜け出そうと努力する。
He is shocked and terrified, but manages to work his way out of bed.
彼の家族は、彼が部屋から出てこないことに気づき、心配し始める。
His family notices that he does not come out of his room and begins to worry.
妹のグレータは特に兄を心配してドアの外で声をかけるが、グレーゴルは自分の変わり果てた姿を見られることを恐れ、応答をためらう。
His sister Greta is particularly worried about her brother and calls out to him outside the door, but Gregor hesitates to respond, fearing that he will be seen in his changed state.
そのうち、上司が彼を訪ねてきて、職場に遅刻した理由を問いただすが、グレーゴルは返事をするどころかドアを開けることもできない。
Eventually, his boss comes to visit him and asks him why he is late for work, but Gregor is unable to open the door, let alone respond.
やがて彼は何とかドアを開け、家族と上司に自分の姿を見せる。
Eventually he manages to open the door and shows himself to his family and his boss.
家族は恐怖に叫び、上司は逃げ去ってしまう。

The whole family begins to feel that he is a kind of burden, and Gregor's presence undermines the family life.
