Liminality

Liminality
When we think of liminality, we think of changes in human experience and society.
The concept refers to the process of moving from one particular state to another, often accompanied by instability and ambiguity.
For example, a ritual such as the coming-of-age ceremony is an example of liminality.
In Japan, the coming-of-age ceremony is a symbolic event that marks the transition from child to adult, but just because the ceremony is over does not mean that one can suddenly behave in an adult-like manner.
Therefore, there is a transition period during which people begin to learn their roles as social "adults.
Liminality also relates not only to the individual, but also to society and culture as a whole.
For example, the current situation in Japan, where the country wavers between traditional and modern values due to the advancement of globalization, is another example of liminality.
A conflict arises between the desire to preserve traditional culture and the desire to accept new values.
Thus, liminality can be seen as an important process for change and growth, providing time and space for the formation of new identities and social values.
