国家保安省、いわゆるシュタージの監視が人々の日常を支配していた時代。
A time when the surveillance of the Ministry of State Security, the so-called Stasi, dominated people's daily lives.
ドライマンという劇作家と彼の恋人で女優のクリスタは、文化的エリートとして表向きは体制に従順な生活を送っていました。
A playwright named Dreimann and his girlfriend, Krista, an actress, are ostensibly living in obedience to the regime as cultural elites.
しかし、二人の家はシュタージの捜査対象となります。
However, their home becomes the subject of a Stasi investigation.
監視の任務を命じられたのは、シュタージのベテラン捜査官であるヴィースラー。
Assigned the task of surveillance is Wiesler, a veteran Stasi agent.
彼は徹底的に冷徹で、仕事に忠実な男でした。
He was a thoroughly cool-headed man, loyal to his job.
監視を開始し、ドライマンの家に盗聴装置を仕掛け、彼らの会話や行動を記録し始めます。
He begins his surveillance by bugging the Dreimann's house and begins recording their conversations and activities.
最初は単なる職務として、個人的な感情を持たずに監視を行っていました。
At first, he conducted the surveillance as a mere duty, without any personal feelings.
しかし、盗聴を通じて彼らの生活を覗き見るうちに、ヴィースラーの心境が次第に変化していきます。
However, as he peeks into their lives through eavesdropping, Wieseler's feelings gradually change.
ドライマンとクリスタの愛、そして彼らの芸術的な情熱に触れることで、彼は自分自身の人生がどれほど空虚で冷たいものかを感じ始めます。
Through his exposure to Dreimann and Krista's love and their artistic passion, he begins to feel how empty and cold his own life is.
その一方で、ドライマンは友人が体制によって追い詰められたことをきっかけに、政府への不満を募らせていきます。
Meanwhile, Dreimann's frustration with the government grows as his friends are driven into a corner by the regime.
やがて、彼は密かに反体制的な記事を書く決意をします。
Eventually, he decides to secretly write an anti-establishment article.
その記事は西側の雑誌に送られ、東ドイツの体制批判を行うものでした。
The article is sent to a Western magazine and criticizes the East German regime.
もしこれが発覚すれば、ドライマンの人生は完全に破壊されるでしょう。
If this were discovered, Dreimann's life would be completely destroyed.
ヴィースラーは監視を続ける中で、この計画を知ることになります。
Wieseler would learn of this plan as he continued his surveillance.
彼は報告書にこの事実を書き込むべきですが、そうすることでドライマンとクリスタがどんな運命に陥るかを想像すると、手を止めてしまいます。
He should write this fact in his report, but he holds back when he imagines what fate would befall Dryman and Krista if he does so.
彼の中で、職務と人間性の狭間で葛藤が生まれていました。
A conflict has developed within him between his duties and his humanity.
クリスタもまた、圧力に苦しんでいました。
Krista was also suffering from pressure.
シュタージの高官からの脅迫に屈し、ドライマンを裏切る形で情報を漏らしてしまいます。
She succumbed to threats from a high-ranking Stasi official and betrayed Dreimann by divulging information.
この裏切りによって、ドライマンの活動がシュタージに発覚する危機が訪れます。
This betrayal threatened to expose Dreimann's activities to the Stasi.
しかし、最終的にヴィースラーは自らのキャリアを犠牲にしてでも、ドライマンを守ることを選びます。
Ultimately, however, Wieseler chooses to protect Dreimann, even at the cost of his own career.
彼は報告書を偽造し、証拠を隠滅することで彼らを救います。
He saves them by falsifying reports and destroying evidence.
この決断はヴィースラー自身の人生を大きく変えるものでしたが、彼は冷徹な監視官としての役割から脱却し、人間らしい感情を取り戻していきました。
This decision, which changes Wieseler's own life forever, allows him to break free from his role as a cold-hearted watchdog and regain his human emotions.
