Existentialism

Existentialism
Existentialism is a philosophical school of thought that developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries and focuses on human existence itself, freedom, choice, and responsibility.
The central questions of existentialism relate to such issues as What is human life? and Where is the meaning of life?
Existentialist philosophers place emphasis not on abstract theories and systems, but on the concrete experiences and ways of being of individuals.
For example, Kierkegaard discussed the process of finding the true self through faith and despair, and Nietzsche urged a revaluation of value through his declaration that God is dead.
Heidegger, on the other hand, proposed the concept of being-in-the-world and examined how humans exist in relation to the world.
Also, according to Sartre, Existence precedes essence, and man is a being without an inherent essence, but with the freedom to shape himself through his actions and choices.
However, with this freedom comes responsibility, and the pressure of this responsibility can cause anxiety (angst) or existential crisis.
To overcome this anxiety, one needs authenticity, which is to live based on one's own beliefs without depending on the expectations of others or society.
Existentialism has had a great influence on literature and art, and its ideas are reflected especially in the works of 20th century writers.
Sartre's own Vomit and Camus' The Gentiles, for example, are well-known examples that symbolize the question of human loneliness, freedom, and the meaning of life.
Existentialist themes have not lost their importance in today's society.
In response to the problems of alienation and loss of self that people face today, existentialism offers clues for rethinking individual values and ways of life.
