情報操作、いわゆるディスインフォメーション（偽情報）は、古代から現代に至るまで人類社会において重要な役割を果たしてきた。

その目的は主に、敵対勢力を混乱させること、権力を強化すること、または社会的・政治的な目的を達成することである。
