Tokyo Story
戦後の日本、尾道に住む老夫婦・平山周吉と妻・とみは、東京に住む子供たちを訪ねる旅に出ます。
In postwar Japan, Shukichi Hirayama and his wife Tomi, an elderly couple living in Onomichi, set out on a trip to visit their children living in Tokyo.
期待に胸を膨らませた二人でしたが、東京に着くと、子供たちの忙しさに戸惑いを覚えます。
They were filled with anticipation, but when they arrived in Tokyo, they were perplexed by the busy schedule of their children.
長男・幸一は医者で、仕事に追われて両親とゆっくり過ごす時間がありません。
Koichi, the eldest son, is a doctor and is so busy with his work that he does not have time to spend time with his parents.
長女・志げも美容院を経営しており、日々の仕事で手いっぱいです。
Shige, the eldest daughter, also runs a beauty salon and has her hands full with her daily work.
二人は両親を歓待する余裕を持てず、結果的に旅館に泊まらせます。
They do not have time to entertain their parents, so they decide to have them stay at a ryokan (Japanese inn).
しかし、その旅館は騒がしく、老夫婦には不向きでした。
However, the inn is noisy and unsuitable for the elderly couple.
唯一、戦死した次男の妻・紀子が温かく二人を迎え、心を配ります。
Only Noriko, the wife of the second son who died in the war, welcomes them warmly and attentively.
紀子の優しさは老夫婦にとって救いであり、二人は彼女と穏やかなひとときを過ごします。
Noriko's kindness is a great help to the elderly couple, and they spend peaceful moments with her.
しかし、平山夫婦は子供たちの変化を感じ、彼らの心が自分たちから離れていることを痛感します。
However, the Hirayamas sense a change in their children and realize that their hearts have drifted away from them.
やがて、旅を終えて尾道に帰る途中、とみが病に倒れます。
Eventually, on their way back to Onomichi after their trip, Tomi falls ill.
急報を受けた子供たちは尾道に集まりますが、とみは彼らの到着を待たずに亡くなります。
The children gather in Onomichi upon receiving the urgent news, but Tomi dies before they arrive.
葬儀の後、子供たちはそれぞれの日常に戻り、家族の絆の脆さが浮き彫りになります。
After the funeral, the children return to their own daily routines, highlighting the fragility of family ties.
平山は一人になり、孤独を受け入れつつも、時代の流れに抗うことの難しさを静かに受け止めます。
Hirayama is left alone, and while accepting his loneliness, he quietly accepts the difficulty of resisting the current of the times.
その姿には、人生の儚さと家族のあり方を問いかける深いメッセージが込められています。
His appearance contains a profound message that questions the fragility of life and the nature of family.
