第二次世界大戦末期、神戸は空襲に見舞われた。
At the end of World War II, Kobe was hit by an air raid.
その中で、清太と節子の兄妹は母親を失い、焼け野原に取り残される。
Seita and Setsuko lost their mother and were left behind in the burnt ruins.
父親は海軍に従軍中で、二人きりで生き延びる術を探すしかなかった。
Their father was serving in the Navy, and they were left alone to find a way to survive.
清太は妹を守ろうと必死で、親戚の家に身を寄せるが、厳しい生活の中で次第に冷たい扱いを受ける。
Seita, desperate to protect his sister, takes shelter at a relative's house, but is gradually treated coldly by the harsh living conditions.
やがて清太は、節子と共に親戚の家を離れ、自力で生きていく決断をする。
Eventually, Seita decides to leave the relative's house with Setsuko and live on his own.
二人は廃墟となった防空壕を住処にし、周囲の自然から少しでも食料を見つけ出す日々を送った。
The two make an abandoned air-raid shelter their home and spend their days finding what little food they can from the surrounding nature.
ホタルが飛び交う夜、節子は小さな命の輝きに目を輝かせるが、同時にその命が短いことも悟る。
At night when fireflies are flying around, Setsuko's eyes sparkle with the brightness of a tiny life, but she also realizes that her life is short.
飢えと病に苦しむ節子を救おうと、清太はなんとか食料を手に入れようと奔走する。
Seita scrambles to find food to save Setsuko, who is suffering from hunger and illness.
しかし戦時下の物資不足と他者の冷淡さが、二人の状況をさらに厳しくした。
However, wartime shortages and the indifference of others made their situation even more difficult.
清太が戻った時には、節子はもう限界を迎えていた。

兄の愛情に包まれながらも、彼女は小さな命を燃やし尽くすように静かに息を引き取った。

清太は節子を火葬し、その灰を入れた缶を大切に持ち歩くようになる。
Seita cremated Setsuko and began to carry the can containing her ashes around with great care.
