Zen Buddhism is a branch of Japanese Buddhism, particularly known for its practice centered on zazen (seated meditation).
The origins of Zen can be traced back to the Zen sect in China, which was introduced to Japan in the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
Subsequently, the Rinzai and Soto sects spread in Japan, each with its own unique characteristics, influencing many people to this day.
Zen teachings do not emphasize formality or theory, but rather aim to attain enlightenment through direct experience.
For example, it is famous for its method of encouraging intuitive understanding beyond the boundaries of thought through questions called koans.
It is also important to incorporate training into daily life, and as symbolized by the phrase If you don't work for a day, you won't eat for a day, labor and daily activities themselves are considered training.
The spirit of Zen has deeply influenced Japanese culture.
Traditional cultures such as the tea ceremony, gardens, and calligraphy strongly reflect Zen's emphasis on simplicity and harmony with nature.
Thus, Zen is more than just a religious doctrine; it has also contributed to the formation of the Japanese sense of beauty and values.
