The Airport Security Check
成田空港の保安検査場は、いつも少し緊張感が漂っている。
The security checkpoints at Narita Airport are always a bit tense.
今日は特に混雑していたが、旅行者たちはそれぞれの期待や不安を胸に列を進んでいた。
Today it was especially crowded, and travelers were moving through the line with their own expectations and anxieties.
「すみません、この鞄をここに置いてください。」
"Excuse me, please put this bag here."
検査官の若い女性が笑顔で言った。
The inspector, a young woman, said with a smile.
旅行者の田中一郎は、少しぎこちない動きでリュックをX線検査機に乗せた。
Ichiro Tanaka, a traveler, placed his backpack on the X-ray machine with a slightly awkward movement.
「これで大丈夫ですか？」
"Is this all right?"
「はい。
"Yes, it is."
では、ポケットの中も確認してください。」
Then please check your pockets as well."
一郎は少し慌てた様子でポケットを探った。
Ichiro looked a little flustered and searched his pockets.
鍵、携帯、そしてなぜかキャンディの包み紙が出てきた。
He found his keys, his cell phone, and for some reason a candy wrapper.
「すみません、忘れていました。」
I'm sorry, I forgot."
一郎は苦笑しながらそれらをトレイに置いた。
Ichiro chuckled and put them on the tray.
「問題ありません。
"No problem."
通ってください。」
"You can go through."
検査官は手でゲートを指し示した。
The inspector pointed to the gate with her hand.
一郎が金属探知ゲートを通ると、突然「ピッ」という音が鳴った。
As Ichiro walked through the metal detector gate, he suddenly heard a beep.
「えっ？」
"What?"
一郎は驚いた顔で立ち止まった。
Ichiro stopped with a surprised look on his face.
「金属が残っているかもしれませんね。」
"There may be some metal left on you," the inspector said.
検査官が言いながら、手に持った小型の探知機で一郎の身体を調べ始めた。
The inspector began to examine Ichiro's body with a small detector in his hand.
「あ、ベルトですね！」
"Oh, the belt," Ichiro noticed and hurriedly removed his belt.
一郎は気づいてベルトを急いで外した。
"Right."
「そうですね。
"Go through it again."
もう一度通ってみてください。」
This time there was no sound.
今度は音が鳴らなかった。
Ichiro looked relieved.
一郎は安堵の表情を浮かべた。
"Is that all?"
「これで終わりですか？」
"Yes, thank you very much."
「はい、ありがとうございました。
"Have a nice trip!"
良い旅を。」
Ichiro smiled and replied, "Thank you!" and proceeded to pick up his luggage.
一郎は笑顔で「ありがとうございます！」
He breathed heavily as he walked out of the security checkpoint.
と答え、荷物を受け取るために進んだ。
It had been a long time since he had been on an airplane, but he was still a little nervous about these procedures.
保安検査場の外に出ると、彼は大きく息をついた。
"Well, I should head for the gate."
飛行機に乗るのも久しぶりだが、こういった手続きはやはり少し緊張するものだ。
With that, he disappeared into the crowd.
「さて、ゲートに向かおう。」
そうつぶやいて、彼は人混みの中に消えていった。
