Rashomon
The story of Rashomon begins at the gates of a desolate Kyoto.
It was raining heavily that day, and people were gathered there, huddled together.
A lumberjack appears and sits down, looking somewhat thoughtful.
He begins to recount an incredible event.
One day in the mountains, he found a dead body.
Three people's testimonies will be told in court over the corpse.
The first is Tajomaru, a bandit.
He attacks the man who died with his wife, boldly claiming that he killed him in order to take his wife.
He proudly recounts the deed and claims to have won the final duel with the man.
Next, the wife's own testimony is told.
She says that after being humiliated by the bandit, she felt abandoned by her husband and stabbed him out of humiliation and despair.
Her testimony, however, is covered in tears and remains ambiguous as to whether or not it is true.
The third is the testimony of the dead man's spirit, told through a priestess.
He says he was hurt by his wife's betrayal and took his own life at her entreaty.
However, his words also contradict the other testimonies, and the truth is hidden in a deepening fog.
When the woodcutter's story ends, the people around him are confused, not knowing which part of the story is true.
However, it becomes clear that the woodcutter himself actually witnessed the truth.
The story ends with him witnessing the darkness in people's hearts and their self-justification, and questioning what is right.
This story, told under Rashomon, raises questions that sharply approach the very essence of human nature.
