Cognitive Biases

Cognitive Biases
Cognitive biases are irrational biases that affect human thinking and judgment.
We have to process a vast amount of information in our daily lives, and therefore our brains use various shortcuts to work efficiently.
This process creates cognitive biases.
While these biases often lead to errors in our decision making, they also have the advantage of allowing us to make quick decisions.
For example, the representativeness heuristic is a bias that judges probability based on how well a particular event matches a typical example.
As a result, people tend to ignore probabilistically correct judgments.
For example, when we hear that someone is "introverted and meticulous," we tend to assume that he or she is a librarian, when in fact he or she may be more likely to be engaged in other occupations.
Another well-known example is confirmation bias.
This is the tendency to focus only on information that supports one's beliefs and opinions and ignore information that contradicts them.
This bias is especially evident in information gathering on the Internet.
When we fail to make the effort to look for multiple viewpoints on the same topic, we are more likely to form judgments based on biased information.
While it is impossible to completely eliminate cognitive biases, being aware of their existence can help minimize their impact.
Developing critical thinking and having a habit of being exposed to diverse opinions is an effective way to overcome biases.
A better understanding of cognitive biases is the first step toward making more objective and fair decisions.
