中国発祥の表語文字（表意文字とする学説もある）の一種。また、その造字法に従って日本や朝鮮で作られた文字を含めていう。漢字は中国の周辺国に伝わり、現在でも日本語や朝鮮語の表記の一部に使われる。日本語においては、漢字の読み方は音読み（呉音・漢音・宋音・唐音・慣用音）と訓読みに分かれる。中国以外の漢字文化圏で作られたものは国字という。
